When Spiritual Beings Cross the Line
Throughout Scripture, we are given glimpses into the unseen realm, a spiritual reality that exists beyond what our natural eyes can perceive. And in Genesis 6, we encounter one of the most mysterious moments in the Bible: the sons of God, the daughters of men, and the Nephilim.
It raises difficult questions.
Who are the sons of God? What happened before the days of Noah? And what does this rebellion reveal about the unseen realm?
Rather than building our beliefs around theories, traditions, or speculation, we have to make a decision today and every day: we will let Scripture interpret Scripture.
When we look at the phrase “sons of God” throughout the Bible, we begin to see a pattern. In Job 1 and Job 2, the sons of God appear in the heavenly realm, presenting themselves before God. Job 38 tells us that these heavenly beings were present when God laid the foundations of the earth.
This gives us an important picture: Scripture is revealing that the unseen realm is real, and that spiritual beings exist within God’s created order.
But then something changes.
Jude 6 tells us that certain angels did not keep their proper domain, but abandoned their appointed place. They crossed a boundary that God had established. Second Peter 2 connects this rebellion with the days before Noah.
Then we return to Genesis 6.
The sons of God took the daughters of men, and the Nephilim appeared on the earth. Whatever questions remain about the details, Scripture makes one thing clear: rebellion against God’s order has consequences.
Throughout the Bible, we see this same theme. God establishes authority, order, and boundaries, and rebellion is an attempt to reject what God has established.
But there is another reality we cannot miss.
Paul tells us in Ephesians 6:12 that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of darkness and wickedness in the heavenly places. Although the unseen real and battles are real, we know the authority of Jesus is greater.
Ephesians 1 tells us that God raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at His right hand, far above every ruler, authority, power, and dominion.
And then Ephesians 2 gives us an incredible truth: God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly places.
Think about that.
We are not there independently. We are there in Christ.
The One who is far above every spiritual power has brought us into His victory and given us authority in Him.
That means we don’t respond to the reality of spiritual warfare with fear. We respond with faith, obedience, and confidence in Jesus.
There is still so much to uncover about the unseen realm. Scripture gives us enough to know that it is real, that spiritual rebellion is real, and that there is a battle we cannot see with our natural eyes.
But Scripture also gives us something greater to focus on. Jesus is far above. Far above every ruler.
Far above every authority. Far above every power. And far above every spiritual force.
The deeper we go into the unseen realm, the more clearly we should see the greatness of Christ.
The enemy may operate in the unseen, but Jesus reigns over it.
He is FAR ABOVE!
