The Spirit of Prophecy

Discovering the Spirit of Prophecy: Hearing God’s Voice

Have you ever felt like God was trying to get your attention, maybe even in the middle of the night? Many of us long to hear His voice, to feel His presence, and to understand His will. The truth is, God still speaks today through the Holy Spirit, and one of the ways He does this is through the spirit of prophecy.

Prophecy is a gift from God meant to encourage, guide, and strengthen us. Unfortunately, it’s often misunderstood. But Scripture shows us a balanced view: prophecy is real, powerful, and for every believer, but it must always be tested. Revelation 19:10 says, “The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” In other words, prophecy will always testify and point us to Jesus and glorify Him.

The Bible gives us clear examples. In Numbers 11, God placed His Spirit on seventy elders and they began to prophesy. In 1 Samuel 10, Saul joined a group of prophets and began to prophesy when the Spirit came upon him. And at Pentecost in Acts 2, the Holy Spirit was poured out on all believers, empowering them to declare God’s greatness. From that moment on, prophecy was no longer for a select few—it became available to all who believe.

So how can we embrace this in our own lives? It begins with seeking the Holy Spirit through prayer, worship, and daily time with Him. As we draw near to Him, He draws near to us.

The spirit of prophecy isn’t something distant or reserved for a special few because the Spirit of prophecy is the Holy Spirit John 16:13–14 confirms this “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.”

When we open our hearts to the Holy Spirit, He will transform us, bringing encouragement and hope, and use us to encourage others.

Let’s pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Spirit of prophecy. Help us to hear Your voice clearly and to always glorify Jesus in everything we do. Lead us closer to You each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
